Syslogd is an implementation of the UNIX program by the same name for the Mac OS. For those that don't know syslogd (the UNIX name is all lowercase) is a daemon (background application in Mac terminology) that accepts messages from other applications and the network, and writes them out to system wide log files. Using these log files, the system administrator can see the "state" of the system at any point in time since the system was booted. Syslogd also supports AppleScript and AppleShare IP 6.x.

Syslogd 2.1 has the following features:
  • Syslog network send and receive over UDP port 514 by default (configurable)
  • IP based filtering of network messages
  • A console application that allows you to view events in real time
  • Finder shutdown/restart events are trapped and logged
  • Repeated messages are handled like the UNIX version
  • Log any facility.priority combination to multiple logs
  • Unlimited number of logs
  • A verbose logging option
  • Enhanced AppleScript support over v1.x
  • AppleShare IP 6.x logging (inlcuding a verbose option that will log file access)
  • Supports the MARK facility
  • Support for the Mac OS X/NeXT syslog facility extensions
  • Logs messages from an Airport Base Station
  • Graphical Administration utility
Version 2.x also supports the v1.x feature that allows local Mac applications to use the Syslog faciltiy.

Third party developers can add support for Syslogd very easily. If you are planning on using the services of Syslogd in your application, you MUST visit the Developer Info page. It contains important info on how to use Syslogd from within your app.

Mail me when your app supports Syslogd. Your name and a link to your app will be added to the list of supported applications. Just think, free advertising!

Download the latest version. Note that Syslogd 2.x is $20 Shareware.
Syslogd can be purchased online via a secure connection, or a non-secure connection.

4562 downloads from the local server, and 70 registrations. A registration rate of 1.53%.

System requirements:
Any PowerMacintosh running at least System 7.5.3, the Thread Manager, and ~550K of RAM. Syslogd Admin requires Appearance Manager 1.01 or greater, and ~500K of RAM. Network support is optional, but if enabled requires OpenTransport 1.1.1 or greater. If you are wondering what happened to 68k support, click here.

If you want the latest version of the Thread Manager (2.1.5), it is included in the QuickTime 4 package. QuickTime is also available on many CD-ROM games and shareware collections. If you have Mac OS 8.x, the latest version is included in the System software.

Appearance Manager 1.0.1 is included in Mac OS 8.1 only. If you have an older System version, you must download v1.0.2. (540K)

Syslogd v1.x is still free. It has nowhere near the features of version 2.x, but supports 68k machines, local application logging and limited AppleScript logging.
