Weird Finder hangs solved

Ever since I moved my home directory (actually, the whole /Users mount) to my new Miglia FW Raid, the Finder has been hanging on me every time I logged in. This in turn would prevent loginwindow from launching my preferred auto-launch applications.

Now I don't log in and out very often, but today I had another panic (I think I may have some bad memory) and I decided to solve the Finder annoyance once and for all. At first I thought the problem was some bad pref file or cache somewhere. So I deleted all of my user caches and the system global caches, and the Finder and Dock preference files. That didn't work, so next I moved all of my prefs into a safe location and started fresh. I couldn't believe it, the Finder was still hanging!

My last resort was to delete all .DS_Store files in my home directory–and it worked! I don't know if one of them was corrupted, or possibly referencing a picture file no longer present or what, but whatever it was, the Finder is no longer hanging.

Excellent Customer Service

Well, I called Portable USA today (their customer service center is not open on the weekends), and found out where my brand new Miglia AlchemyTV DVR card came from: OtherWorld Computing.

I ordered my Miglia HS-R Raid enclosure from OWC, and apparently they felt it took too long to reach me, so they sent out the DVR card as an apology. Wow! That is true customer service: correct an "oversight" (at least according to them -- I was actually expecting a ship delay on the RAID) without any prompts (or in my case complaints) from the customer. I can't get over it. This kind of service is unheard of in today's bottom-dollar approach to doing businesss. OWC has won me over, I will be taking my bussiness to them whenever possible. I suggest any readers out there do the same.

Thanks OWC!

PS. When speaking to the Portable USA rep (who was very nice), he said OWC had used them to ship six of these TV cards to other customers who had shipping delays with their orders.

Surprise, Surprise!

Okay, this is really, really weird. I just received an Miglia Alchemy TV/DVR PCI card in on my doorstep. You may say that's normal, but the weird part is, I didn't order the thing! There was no billing slip included, but the shipping label did have my name and address tattooed on it.

I haven't received an e-mail from anyone saying they sent a gift (although my junk filters could have ate it), so I don't know where it came from or why. I guess I'll call the vendor (Portable USA) and see if they can shed some light on the mystery.
